step 2 - sewing the backing and flap
after putting the regular foot back on your machine, first put the cotton piece on the smaller end of the big wool piece and pin it there. you want to do it with the cotton edges folded under a little bit, leaving a little space between them and the edge of the wool. only one side of the cotton will be unfolded, and that's the side that protrudes into the larger end of the wool piece. sew all around the edge of the cotton part, except the un-folded side. see the pic.

  • then, go get the other smaller wool piece and change your machine over to zigzag stitching. don't forget to put the zigzag foot on the thing too, or you'll screw up your needle. just sew a single zigzag stitch down the length of the wool piece, nothing fancy. i'm a little hazy on why this was done, but i've seen it on all the originals and repros, so i know it's supposed to be there. see below pic for the final results.
